Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana – The Western Region of Ghana grapples with a surge in illegal gun proliferation, partly fueled by rampant illegal mining activities and its proximity to conflict-prone regions. Recognizing the pivotal role of drivers in the transportation of goods and people, the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons has initiated a sensitization campaign targeting drivers in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.
Partnering with the Ghana Private Road Transport Unit (GPRTU), the Commission conducted educational sessions at key transportation hubs including the Takoradi-Kumasi VIP Bus terminal, Nkroful Junction Taxi Rank, and the Sekondi Main Station.
Led by the Regional Programmes Officer Mr. Stephen Adjei, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of illlicit arms proliferation and empower drivers to take action against it.
During these sessions, drivers were advised to exercise vigilance when loading luggage onto their vehicles to prevent the transportation of illlicit weapons or components. Assistant Programmes Officer, Miss Gifty Baah, cautioned drivers to assess their temperament carefully before considering acquiring firearms. She emphasized the potential risks posed to both their safety and that of passengers, highlighting the danger of having a firearm accessible during moments of conflict or argument. Additionally, she warned against transporting hazardous chemicals in passenger vehicles, emphasizing the risk of explosions in case of accidents.
Assistant Research Officer Mr. Edmund Appiah-Kubi Dantse emphasized the importance of not taking the law into their own hands, urging drivers to report any suspicions of illlicit weapons to the police. He facilitated the distribution of educational flyers on arms awareness to be displayed in vehicles, enhancing drivers’ capacity to identify and report illicit activities.
Throughout the sessions, drivers were encouraged to play an active role in combating the proliferation of illicit arms, stressing the collective responsibility of citizens in maintaining peace and order.
