EXECUTIVE SECRETARY PARTCIPATES IN THE SECOND MEETING FOR THE GROUP OF GOVERNMENTAL EXPERTS ON “PROBLEM ARISING FROM THE ACCUMULATION OF CONVENTIONAL AMMUNITION STOCKPILES IN SURPLUS”

The Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons participated in the second meeting for the Group of Governmental Experts on “Problem arising from the Accumulation of Conventional Ammunition Stockpiles in surplus” at UN Palais Des Nations in Geneva Switzerland.

The United Nations General Assembly on 4 December 2017 adopted Resolution 72/55 titled “Problems arising from the accumulation of conventional ammunition stockpiles in surplus”during Seventy-second session of the First Committee meetings at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Paragraph 16 of the Resolution, requested the Secretary-General of the United Nations to convene a Group of Governmental Experts in 2020 to kick start an open, informal consultations on problems arising from the accumulation of conventional ammunition stockpiles in surplus.

The Group of Governmental Experts  on behalf of the Secretary General, met to review and discuss the implementation of the Resolution. The GGE in doing its work, would seek views from UN Member States, Regional Organizations, International Organizations, Experts, Civil Society Groups etc. and make recommendations for the formulation of policies for the implementation of the Resolution to the Secretary General.

The GGE is currently chaired by Mr. Marcus Bleinroth, former Director of the Conventional Arms Division of the German Federal Foreign Office.

Mr. Jones Applerh was among other Twenty-Three (23) Governmental Experts nominated by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs to conclude a report and make recommendations to be adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in October 2021. His advisor, Mr. Leonard Tettey accompanied him. The second meeting took place from 17th to 21st May, 2021
