On Monday, 14th July 2025, the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed – Mubarak reiterated Government’s commitment to pass the National Arms Bill into law by the end of this year. A statement he made during the Government Accountability Series that was held at the Jubilee house on Monday.
The Minister in addressing the press cited some key achievements of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons during the first half of the year. The achievements include hosting the KAFO VI Regional Planning Meeting in Accra in partnership with the UNODC, establishing the Students Against Firearms Trafficking (SaFIT) Project in some schools in Elubo which will be duplicated nationwide, and finally getting a scheme of service for the staff of the Commission who have been working without one since the establishment of the Commission.
The Minister further explained that since there is a new Parliament, the Bill would have to go through series of processes before being laid on the floor of Parliament and this is causing some delays in its passage into law.
He however demonstrated the Government’s commitment to passing the Arms Bill into law when he confirmed that there have been discussions with the Executive Secretary of the Commission for a crunch meeting with key stakeholders in the coming days. The purpose of this meeting will be to thoroughly discuss the Bill before it is laid on the floor of Parliament.
