As Ghana celebrates another year of independence, we are reminded that the true essence of our freedom lies in peace, security, and the rule of law. A strong democracy is not merely defined by free and fair elections––it is sustained by national stability, the protection of human rights, and the absence of threats that undermine our collective progress.

One such threat is the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons. Illicit weapons have been linked to electoral violence, armed robbery, and inter-communal conflicts. When firearms fall into wrong hands, they fuel violence, disrupt the safety and development of communities, and weaken our democratic institutions.

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) remains at the forefront of efforts to address these risks. Through advocacy, public awareness campaigns, and strengthened collaboration with security agencies, NACSA is working tirelessly to prevent and combat the unlawful circulation and misuse of firearms in Ghana.

However, the fight against illicit arms requires a collective commitment. Every Ghanaian has a role to play in safeguarding our democracy. We must therefore reject all forms of violence whether political, ethnic, or criminal—report illegal arms possession, misuse or abuse, and support the security agencies in combating arms proliferation. By doing so, we reinforce the foundation of a peaceful and stable nation.

As we commemorate our independence, let us reaffirm our dedication to a Ghana where disputes are settled through dialogue, where security is assured, and where development is unhindered by the threat of gun violence.

If you witness any suspicious activity related to firearms, make it a duty as a good citizen to report it to either the National Security on 999, the Ghana Police Service on 18555 or the Small Arms Commission on +233 (0)302 669 071. Suspicions can also be channelled via our official social media platforms: Small Arms Commission, Ghana on Facebook & LinkedIn, @SmallArmsGh on X (Twitter).

Happy Independence Day! Long live Ghana! Long live democracy!
