As part of its efforts to promote the safe and secure management of Small Arms and Light Weapons and Ammunition, the European Union (EU), in collaboration with its implementing partner, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), has developed an internationally recognized Arms and Ammunition Management Validation System (AAMVS) based on international standards and good practices.
The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons in partnership with The Ammunition Management Advisory Team (AMAT) met with participants from two ECOWAS Member States, Ghana and Liberia, for a two-day review workshop of the AAMVS Pilot. Supported by the EU, the workshop aimed to gather expert feedback on the assessment tool and to gain a better understanding of how AAMVS requests would be processed.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Samuel W. Yeboah, Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, emphasized the critical importance of this initiative. “The development of the AAMVS marks a significant step forward in our collective efforts to enhance arms and ammunition management. It not only strengthens our national security but also promotes regional stability,” said Mr. Yeboah.
The workshop was marked by active engagement from the participants, who provided valuable insights and constructive feedback on the newly developed system. Representatives from Ghana and Liberia shared their perspectives on the practical challenges and potential benefits of implementing the AAMVS in their respective countries.
The European Union’s support for the workshop underscores its commitment to promoting peace and security in West Africa. By investing in the development and implementation of the AAMVS, the EU aims to contribute to global efforts in combating the illicit trade and misuse of small arms and light weapons.
