Officers from the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Samson Akanlewine Ayamga and Micheal Adongo, stationed at the Sampa Border Post, spearheaded a vital Public Education and Sensitization Program at the Ghana Private Road Transport Union of Trade Union Congress (G.P.R.T.U. of T.U.C) (Sampa Lorry Station), last Monday. Attendees, including drivers, passengers, and traders, received crucial insights on “The influence of Gun Possession, the Danger to our Peace and Security.”

During the session, officers emphasized the detrimental impact of firearm possession, particularly evident in conflicts and criminal activities, resulting in a surge of homicides and violent deaths within society. Additionally, they shed light on the less visible but equally significant long-term repercussions associated with gun violence, advocating for preventive measures to mitigate its effects.

Highlighting the broader societal ramifications, the officers stressed on how gun availability poses a grave threat to individuals and communities alike. They emphasized that firearms often serve as potent tools for inflicting harm, whether through killings, injuries, or intimidation, stemming from disputes over various issues such as chieftaincy matters, land disputes, or political and criminal motives.

The officers addressed the issue of proliferation and trafficking of illicit firearms, particularly in regions plagued by high crime rates and violence. They emphasized that the majority of weapons used in criminal activities originate from illicit sources, worsening security challenges across the country.

In their closing remarks, the officers reiterated the need to settle disputes through dialogue instead of guns. They reiterated that unauthorized possession of firearms constitutes a severe offense under Ghanaian law, punishable by hefty fines of up to Ghc12,000.00 or lifelong imprisonment, with a minimum sentence of 10 years.

Mr. Gyasoo Briamah, the Chairman of the station extended appreciation to the officers for their efforts in raising awareness on this critical issue and affirmed their willingness to continue collaborating on further initiatives aimed at promoting peace and security within the community.
